Euro-India Future Internet Research and Experiments collaboration workshop
MyFIRE in partnership with ITU has organised an Euro-India Future Internet Research and Experiments collaboration Workshop in Pune, India on 16 December 2010
On 13-17 December 2010 Pune hosted the ITU-T Kaleidoscope event: Beyond the Internet?- Innovations for future networks and services. It was the third in a series of peer-reviewed academic conferences that aims to increase the dialogue between experts working on the standardization of information and communications technologies (ICTs) and academia.
Kaleidoscope 2010 highlighted multidisciplinary aspects of future Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) including future services and applications demand as well as social and economic impacts. The focus was on innovative technologies and contributors might have needed to challenge the fundamental networking design principles of the Internet.
MyFIRE project joined the event and organized a workshop on 16 December. The main objective of the workshop was to identify possible relationships which could be established between the EU FIRE community and Indian future internet research communities, with a focus on the tested.
To reach this objective, many conferences took place throughout the day to:
- Understand Future Internet Research and Experimentation context in India and Europe: Indian and European ICT context, identified needs for test bed and common issues.
- Present examples of testbed in India and Europe
- Present examples of collaboration between Europe and India in ICT field
- Make a focus on standardisation aspect, to improve the testbed efficiency for the future internet research and to bridge research and the market
In this context, the chief keynote speakers were invited Mr. B. K. Murthy from the Indian communication ministry to present the landscape of Indian Internet research, networks and testbeds deployed and planned and Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, the eminent scientist, recipient of multiple national awards (Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India), as well as Prof. Ramjee Prasad (GISFI), plus speakers from the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of technology, Center for development of advanced computing, Department of Telecommunication, Indian Government and national contact point ECIR representatives.
In addition two discussion panels have been organized to favor cross-exchanges between Indian and European researchers and providers of facilities, to build international future internet network and create relationship opportunities. One addressed ‘Testing environment for development of Future Internet: Activities landscape' and one ‘Future Internet Experiments: Opportunities for cooperation between Europe and India".
The workshop was held at Sinhgad Technical Education Society (STES), in Narhe Campus of Pune (India).
In conclusion, this workshop organised by MyFIRE project permited us to provide to Indian internet research communities the with overview of FIRE activities in Europe, and the survey results on the requirements of Research experiments landscape from providers and users perspectives. The discussions both during the workshop and in private discussions demonstrated considerable interest of Indian researchers in European FIRE activities and in closer collaboration with possible participation in the future projects.
The list of interested persons for the researchers in Europe is available on request, for developing future collaboration with Indian partners.
